Job Description

Part-time student opportunities allow undergraduate and graduate students to schedule their work around their classes.  These roles are available in both the office, customer service centers, and in the production environment.  This program will allow students to gain experience working in a business/manufacturing environment while maintaining their full time academic commitments.

This part time work can be done throughout the student’s matriculation at college/university with the options for extended work hours during the summer months.  Student are eligible for part time opportunities after the completion of their freshman year and can work until graduation.  Students must be within a commutable distance of the Southwire location to participate in the Part Time Student Program.


Task and Responsibilities:  

  • Prepare and test products per certification body standards (UL, CSA, ICEA, etc.)
    • Physical prperty testing (tensile and elongation)
    • Small Scale Flame (VW-1, Hrizontal/FT-2, Burning Particles)
  • Report clear and concise data to Electrical/Mechanical testing manager and/or customers
  • Pick up and deliver samples and/or supplies at locations other than the Cofer Center (BWP,SCUPP, MSG, Corporate Supply, etc.)
  • Perform physically demanding tasks with a weight of at least 25 lbs. and standing for long periods of time – often requires personnel to get dirty
  • Manipulate multiple testing efforts in a time constrained environment
  • Read and understand test procedures called out in certification body standards (UL, CSA, ICEA, etc.) – a lot of reading and writing
  • Ability to adapt to change quickly while still resolving current issues and presenting solutions/data
  • Assist in product development through testing new products



  • Must be a rising Sophomore, Junior, or Senior
  • Ability to work at least 20 hours per week
  • Studying towards a Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Applied Science
  •  At least a 2.5 GPA
  •  Excellent listening, communication and written skills
  •  Energetic and passionate with a flexible spirit
  •  Ability to proactively identify problems and propose effective solutions
  •  Ability to work and complete projects independently, as well as within a team environment
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
