Formulations Lab Technician
Job Summary
The Formulations Lab Technician will be responsible for conducting polymer testing and providing accurate and concise data in support of product development. The candidate will develop and help implement new compounds from conceptualization to production. This includes but is not limited to weighing and blending raw materials, setting up equipment for processing, compounding raw materials into a usable form, reactive extrusion, wire prototyping, and testing of finished product. Some local travel will be required (Carrollton area).
Key Responsibilities
• Operate equipment and perform standardized testing in the laboratory under the direction of the Manager, Formulations and Rubber Development Engineers.
• Comprehend, implement, and interpret regulatory standards and methodologies.
• Provide assistance to compounding and extrusion operations.
• Evaluate raw materials, raw material suppliers, and compounds for cost reduction and quality improvements.
• Independently prioritize and complete assigned projects while adhering to deadlines given by the Manager, Formulations and Rubber Development Engineers
• Document and communicate test results within an ISO 9001 environment.
• Other tasks may be required to assist with other corporate and R&D functions as deemed necessary by the Manager, Formulations and Rubber Development Engineers.
• Generate and compound formulations on compounding equipment such as twin screws, kneaders, internal mixers, high intensity mixers, single screw extruders, roll mills, and plaque presses.
• Characterize polymers and formulations using equipment such as DSC, TGA, FTIR, Rheometers, and related equipment.
Education, Experience, and Skills
• Education: High school diploma required; must be currently enrolled in an accredited university. Preferred majors include Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or Materials Science.
• Experience: Hands-on experience with analytical instruments such as FTIR, rheometers, and tensometers is a plus.
• Availability: Must be able to work up to 20 hours per week.
• Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 45 lbs and work in a physically demanding R&D and production environment.
• Skills: Proactive in learning and self-motivated.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Attentive to technical data with heavy reading and writing.
• High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Must be able to function in a team environment while staying focused on individual responsibilities.
• Proficient with Office365 applications (Excel, Word, Access, Outlook).
