Job Summary

The Specifications Specialist is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely support for customer order entry, engineering change management, and customer requests for quotation (RFQs) processes. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that all products meet defined technical, quality, and compliance requirements. The Specifications Specialist will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and managing detailed product specifications that guide manufacturing, procurement, and quality assurance processes. The role requires strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including R&D, manufacturing, sales, product management and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains somewhat complex cable designs, bill of materials (BOMs), markings, and other product specification requirements into the specification system upon receipt of a customer order.
  • Administers product specification activities throughout customer order entry and engineering change management processes to ensure accurate and efficient execution.
  • Reviews and implements Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) through the Management of Change (MoC) process and specification systems in support of Sales, Product Management, R&D, Compliance, or Manufacturing inquiries.
  • Coordinates somewhat complex specification projects, ensuring that all relevant internal stakeholders, including product managers and engineers, are informed and aligned with customer needs. Tracks and manages the progress of specification deliverables.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams—including Sales, Product Management, R&D, Compliance and Manufacturing—to ensure specifications are feasible, comprehensive, up to date, meet customer needs and comply with evolving industry standards.
  • Provides assistance to Sales, Product Management and Manufacturing in specification interpretation and compliance questions. Partners with Sales and Manufacturing to create designs and bill of materials (BOMs) for quotations, enabling competitive and timely responses to RFQs.
  • Reviews and analyzes product standards, customer specifications and cable drawings confirming Southwire’s capabilities or recommending alternate products meeting customer requirements.
  • Collaborates with key R&D Engineering functions, Business Units, Quality and Manufacturing teams to gather insights and feedback on product design requirements and ensure accuracy of product specification templates, and configurable models for a product group or family of products.
  • Develops and implements quality control procedures, work instructions, internal design guides and other product specifications documentation ensuring all technical documents meet internal and industry standards. Provides guidance to junior team members to improve specification accuracy.

    • Required Education & Experience

    Minimum Education Level: Bachelor's Degree

    Specialized Degree: Science, business, or related technical field

    Licenses/Certificates: None

    Years of Experience: 2-4 years

    Field of Expertise: Experience in wire and cable industry. Basic Knowledge of wire & cable products, industry standards, and manufacturing processes. Experience with computer software such as Microsoft Office, SAP and Cablebuilder.

    Preferred Education & Experience

    Specialized Degree: Science, business, or related technical field

    Licenses/Certificates: None

    Years of Experience: 5-7 Years

    Field of Expertise: Experience in wire and cable industry. Basic Knowledge of wire & cable products, industry standards, and manufacturing processes. Experience with computer software such as Microsoft Office, SAP and Cablebuilder.
