Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Field Service Technician will perform advanced diagnostics and fault locating on underground power cables in various markets including industrial and utility applications. This role will interact with a direct power distribution customers and contractors onsite, operate diagnostics equipment, acquire test data, and communicate with the remote support team.   

   

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for working safely with no electrical contact, incidents or personal injuries  

Enhance and advance a below zero incident safety culture and behavior  

Testing/diagnosing/fault locating or tracing for medium to high voltage cable  

Reading and interpreting mechanical prints, electrical prints, and other related technical documentation.   

Build out test vans with proper equipment, maintain site inventory, and exhibit proper housekeeping of vehicles  

Operate and interpret data with a Time Domain Reflectometer, AC/DC Hi Pot, VLF/Tan Delta, Partial Discharge test set, MV cable and fault locater (thumper)  

Comprehend and follow OSHA and company safety rules  

   

PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS:  

Self-starter with the ability to operate remotely from the main office with minimum supervision  

Availability for assignments with short notice  

Strong competency in instrument systems technology including mechanical, electrical, and software technology  

Ability to think and act in a logical and methodical way  

Able and willing to travel on a regular basis  

   

REQUIREMENTS:  

Two-year vocational or post-high school program in electrical trades or industrial electricity.   

Associate degree in technology from an accredited 2-year technical college or similar military experience/training would be an asset   

NETA certification (2,3, or 4) would be an asset  

OSHA 10 or OSHA 30, NFPA 70-E training  

2 plus years’ experience working on commercial and industrial electrical projects  

Excellent driving record, valid driver’s license, and ability to meet DOT requirements for commercial motor vehicles  

Basic computer skills and entry level proficiency with MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Internet/Web)  

Experience in splicing and terminating shielded electrical power cable a plus  

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:  

Prolonged periods (10 hour) of standing, lifting, and carrying materials   

Must be able to perform physical labor including reaching, twisting, bending, grasping, pushing, pulling, climbing, kneeling, crouching, stooping, and lifting.   

Must be able to perform work outdoors in all types of weather.   

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds at a time.   

Must have good hand/eye coordination   

Must be in good physical condition and have good motor skills.   

Ability and willingness to wear Arc-Flash suit, fall protection harness, safety boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hats, respirator, and additional personal protective equipment.   

Physically able to work with heavy tools and equipment at heights.   

Ability to use hand tools and power tools.   

Willingness to work flexible schedule including overtime, evening, weekends, holidays, and night hours as required   

Drive daily, locally/regionally and be available for periodic overnight travel (50% or more travel)
