Southwire Job Description
Product engineers are responsible for designing commercial products and their associated manufacturing processes. They coordinate with the product development team to turn ideas into marketable products based on industry research and market regulations.
Product Engineer Responsibilities:
• Design and draft the engineering drawings of products using designing and simulation software
• Develop fabrication drawings for sheet metal shop to use
• Developing design ideas based on customer interests, budgets, and market research.
• Selecting product materials and designing the product manufacturing process.
• Meeting with the development team to discuss product ideas.
• Test products (prototypes) & adjust design via simulation software and evaluate the product prototype to identify potential safety hazards
Product Engineer Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering field
• Previous experience working as a product engineer.
• In-depth knowledge of Solidworks, CAD, AutoCAD, and CAM software.
• In-depth knowledge of Electrical codes and wiring diagrams
• Verifiable experience with SAP or similar ERP programs.
• Background with use ISO and engineering repository software
• Experience with 3D printing.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Good project management skills.
• Creative and passionate about creating solutions to customer problems
• Able to work efficiently with minimal supervision
• Able to work in seated in front of a computer for long hours at a time
• Product engineer will be able to create 2D drawing from 3D models & ability and experience in creating drawings/models from actual parts.
• Capable of creating and using .stp files for production
Teamwork
• Product engineers need to be open to teamwork because they regularly collaborate with Manufacturing, Sales, Quality, Product development teams and other Engineers to brainstorm, design and create products. With a team-oriented attitude, product engineers can complete their job duties effectively.
Creative thinking
• Creative thinking is an essential skill for product engineers. Their jobs require them to design prototypes and come up with unique solutions for defects. They must think creatively to identify which materials would work best to construct the product while maintaining cost-effective measures that benefit the company.
Interpersonal communication
• Interpersonal communication is the ability of someone to adapt their communication methods to accommodate different relationships adequately. Product engineers need excellent interpersonal communication skills because they not only communicate with other engineering professionals, but also communicate with other teams in the manufacturing environment.
